“Chris brought thoughtfulness and clarity to the role, and it was easy to see how his years of experience in education, particularly as a senior leader, have equipped him to hold a room, think on his feet, and guide others with calm authority and a big heart.”

The legal part of the process…
Many couples are unsure of the process when it comes to booking a celebrant and handling the legal requirements of marriage. To help make things clearer, we’ve outlined the key steps below to guide you through the journey with ease.
In brief, here’s what to do:
Choose and book your venue
Find and secure your celebrant
Register your intent to marry
Book your statutory signing appointment
Enjoy planning the rest of your celebration!
-
The first step is selecting a venue that reflects your vision for the day. The beauty of a celebrant-led ceremony is that it can take place almost anywhere—there’s no requirement for the space to be licensed, as long as the legal formalities are handled separately. This opens up a world of possibilities: from elegant stately homes and scenic gardens to forest glades and lakeside clearings. Just ensure you have permission from the land or property owner.
-
Once the venue is confirmed, the next step is to choose your celebrant. It's important to research and find someone who aligns with your style and values. A consultation allows you to get a feel for their approach and personality, helping ensure they’re the right fit for your day.
One of the great advantages of working with a celebrant is the ability to craft a completely bespoke ceremony. Unlike registrar-led services, which typically offer limited set scripts, a celebrant can collaborate with you to design something truly personal. Most celebrants also officiate just one wedding per day, giving you the freedom to select the time that suits you best.
-
Regardless of your ceremony type, you are legally required to register your intent to marry with your local registration service. This ensures the appropriate documentation is prepared.
Simply contact your local office and let them know you’ve chosen a celebrant-led wedding or civil ceremony. You’ll then arrange a short “statutory signing” appointment to complete the legal wording and documentation. This takes around six minutes and can be done in the lead-up to your celebration.
A celebrant’s role is to celebrate your love and commitment in a meaningful and symbolic ceremony—whether that’s a wedding, civil partnership celebration, or commitment ceremony.
-
On the day of your statutory signing, keep in mind that you don’t need to include vows, ring exchanges, or personal touches—those are all saved for your actual ceremony with your celebrant. It’s a simple legal process involving two witnesses and a small fee (usually around £50).
Your celebrant can also provide a commemorative certificate to sign during your ceremony, along with printed copies of your vows and readings to keep as cherished mementos.
And remember—your celebrant-led wedding or civil ceremony can take place almost anywhere! Past ceremonies have been held on beaches, in woodlands, barns, castles, working farms, and even in fields under the stars.
-
With your venue, celebrant, and legalities in place, you’re free to focus on the fun parts of planning—choosing readings, writing vows, designing your ceremony space, and bringing your dream day to life.
The process really is simple and flexible. If you’re considering a ceremony that’s personal, heartfelt, and free from restrictions, the team would be delighted to talk you through the options and answer any questions. With two former registrars on board, they bring expert insight and practical advice to ensure everything runs smoothly.
